Usually a significant difference in potential between the blanket and the thick carpet would result in a gradually diminishing flow of charged particles. This ion exchange causes the static charge phenomenon that most people experience as a brief shock or hair-raising event.

In my case, however, we know it has nothing to do with static electricity.
